Flashcards that actually work

How to write a card that tests one thing, and when to retire it.

The guide

One card, one fact or one step. If a card needs the word "and", split it into two.

Ask a question the exam could ask. "What is the unit of power?" is a card. "Power" on the front is not.

Write the answer in your own words, then add one sentence explaining why it is true. Cards you cannot explain tend to be cards you memorise badly.

Retire a card after three correct answers on three different days. Keeping it forever wastes revision time you could give to a card you keep missing.

Use the Flashcards tool to generate a first draft from any topic, then edit every card. Generated cards are a starting point, not a finished deck.
